Broadbeach is quietest and best before 9am, and from Opus Broadbeach you can make the most of it on foot. Here are five early-riser stops within a 10-minute walk of our door: free beach yoga at Kurrawa Park, coffee from 5:45am, a second early cafe, sunrise straight over the water and the Oceanway before the crowds. Set an alarm and the morning is yours.
Where is the free beach yoga near Opus?
On the grass at Kurrawa Park, next to Kurrawa Surf Club, about a 10-minute walk east from our Chelsea Avenue door. Thursday mornings, 6am to 7am, from August through to April.
This is the one to plan your alarm around. The City of Gold Coast runs free community beach yoga here through its Active and Healthy program, led by the Maya Wellness team on the northern side of the surf club. It costs nothing, runs weather permitting, and all you bring is your own mat and towel. Sessions move through postures tied to the breath as the light comes up over the ocean, which is about as good as a Thursday gets. Turn up a few minutes early to find a spot on the grass, since it is popular and starts on time. August is the first month back after the winter break, so it suits a spring stay.
Where can you get coffee at 6am near Opus?
Elk Espresso sits at 16 Chelsea Avenue, a one to two-minute walk along our own street, which makes it the unofficial Opus breakfast room. It opens daily at 5:45am.
If you are up for the sunrise, Elk is open before it. The coffee is the reason to come this early, poured from quarter to six while the street is still half asleep, and the kitchen follows a little later with its colourful brunch plates. It is walk-in only with no bookings, so an early wander over on a weekend gets you in before the mid-morning queue. Guests keep mentioning how close it is and the easy start it gives the day, and being a couple of minutes from the lobby means you can be back with coffees before anyone else has stirred. Order at the counter and grab a footpath table if the morning is warm.
Is there a second early cafe worth the short walk?
No Name Lane is tucked into 16 Charles Avenue, about a three to four-minute walk from Opus toward the Broadbeach mall. It opens at 6am on weekdays and 6:30am on weekends.
When Elk is full, this is the easy backup, and plenty of regulars rate it first. No Name Lane runs on consistency: smooth espresso, quick service and simple breakfast plates without a fuss. The laneway setting keeps it quieter than the main strip, which suits a slow first coffee before the day fills up. Guests keep mentioning the friendly regulars-know-your-order feel, so it rewards a repeat visit across a longer stay. Because it opens at six on weekdays, it pairs neatly with an early beach walk: coffee first, then the short stroll down to the sand while the light is still soft.
Where does the sun come up over Broadbeach?
Straight out of the ocean, best watched from the sand or the Oceanway path, about a 10-minute walk east of our door. Through winter the sun rises around 6am to 6:30am.
Broadbeach faces due east, so the beach genuinely watches the sunrise rather than the sunset, which is the quiet advantage of this stretch of coast. Walk down Chelsea Avenue to the Esplanade and you get the whole show over open water, with the early light catching the tops of the waves. It is free, it is a few minutes away, and mid-winter mornings are cool and still, ideal for it. Bring a coffee from Elk and settle on the low dune wall by Kurrawa Surf Club. Guests keep mentioning the floor-to-ceiling windows and the walk to the water, and the sunrise is the version of that you have to set an alarm for.
Can you have the Oceanway to yourself before breakfast?
The Gold Coast Oceanway runs right along the beachfront, reached in about 10 minutes on foot via the Kurrawa foreshore. It is open at all hours, and it is emptiest before 8am.
The pre-8am hour is the sweet spot for a walk, a run or a gentle ride, when the flat, sealed path is nearly your own and the air is still cool. Head north toward Surfers Paradise or south past Nobby Beach and pick your distance. One thing to know: the lifeguard flags at Kurrawa go up at 8am, so an early swim means waiting for the patrols and staying between the flags. Before then, keep to the sand and the path. There are free showers and shaded seats along the way, so you can stretch, cool off and still be back at Opus in time for a proper breakfast.
