Lifeguards set the red and yellow flags each morning by Kurrawa Surf Life Saving Club, and the wide, gently shelving beach suits an easy morning dip. Come early for the calmest water and the coolest part of the day, before the sand warms up. There are free cold showers behind the beach to rinse off, so you can wander back for breakfast without tracking salt through the lobby. The pathway runs right along the beachfront, reached in about 10 minutes on foot from our door via the Kurrawa foreshore. Open at all hours, though it is at its best around sunrise.
The Gold Coast Oceanway is a continuous walking and cycling path that traces the coast, heading north toward Surfers Paradise and south past Nobby Beach to Mermaid. Walking or riding it costs nothing, and the flat, sealed surface suits prams, wheelchairs and a gentle jog alike. Time it for early morning and you get the sunrise coming up straight over the water, with far fewer people about. When can you watch whales from the shore for free?

July is prime time. Humpback whales migrate past the Gold Coast from June to October, with the peak between July and September, and you can watch the whole thing from dry land for nothing. Scan the horizon from the Oceanway or the sand and look for spouts and breaches, especially on a still morning when the ocean is glassy. For a closer look, the ocean-facing Oceanview Track at Burleigh Head National Park is a 2.3km loop with lookouts straight over the migration line.
